ASEAN Grassroots Peoples Assembly
The ASEAN Grassroots Peoples Assembly culminated in a massive gathering of over 1,500 civil society representatives and community members from all over ASEAN in front of the National Assembly in Phnom Penh on Nov. 16. The aim of the gathering was to bring attention to the variety of causes represented by AGPA participants — from LGBT issues to human trafficking to worker’s rights. The event was conducted peacefully, with participants singing songs, listening to speakers, holding signs and eventually delivering a petition to the National Assembly. Despite the lack of any apparent threat to public safety or order, the demonstration was closely monitored by some 250 mixed police – many in riot gear, and some with electric-shock shields. The authorities initially denied permission for the march, but allowed it to continue until 11 a.m. on the condition that it remain on the road in front of the National Assembly, which was closed to regular traffic.
